Bali keeps working as a group trip because it isn't one place. Canggu is the cafe-and-surf hub, Uluwatu is the cliff-top beach club show, and Ubud is the green slow-down everyone needs by night four. Plan three bases, not one, and the trip basically plans itself.

The three-base rule
Trying to day-trip Bali from one hotel is the most common mistake. The island is bigger than people expect and traffic is real. Split your nights: 3 in Canggu, 2 in Ubud, 2 in Uluwatu (or swap Uluwatu for the Nusa islands if your group likes snorkelling).
- Canggu — cafés, sunset bars, beach scene, easy nightlife.
- Ubud — rice fields, yoga, jungle villas, slower mornings.
- Uluwatu — cliff beach clubs, surf breaks, dramatic sunsets.
Villas vs hotels
For 6+, villas are absurdly good value here. Private pool, full kitchen, breakfast cooked in by a staff member — often cheaper per head than a 4-star hotel room. Use Airbnb or local agencies like The Asli Collection. Book at least 2 months ahead in peak season.
Beach clubs, picked properly
There are now too many. The reliable picks: Single Fin (Uluwatu, Sundays), Ulu Cliffhouse (Uluwatu, classy), Finns Beach Club (Canggu, big group energy), and La Brisa (Canggu, sunset). Book day beds in advance or you'll spend an hour standing.
Day trips worth the early start
Nusa Penida by speedboat is the standout — Kelingking, Angel's Billabong, Crystal Bay in one day. Mt Batur sunrise hike is a 2 a.m. start but legitimately good. Tegalalang rice terraces and the Tirta Empul water temple are doable as a single Ubud day.

Splitting costs in Bali
- One person pre-pays the villa; log it in Collabtrip and let the app settle.
- Hire one driver for the whole day (IDR 600k – 800k) — splits cleaner than per-ride Grabs.
- Group activities (Penida boat, surf lessons) bill per person, not per room.
- Withdraw cash in big chunks — ATM fees eat budgets fast.
